WRC World Rally Championships in Auckland

Brother Rally New Zealand takes over Viaduct Events Centre for the week

This weekend the Rally Village opens in the Wynyard Quarter
From this Sunday 17 June Auckland’s Viaduct Events Centre (VEC) in the Wynyard Quarter will become ‘Rally Village’ as Brother Rally New Zealand takes centre stage to host the seventh round of the 2012 World Rally Championship.

Bringing the world’s best rally drivers to the country for the 21-24 June event the picturesque venue is set to become the hub for everything to do with Brother Rally New Zealand, with free entry expected to attract thousands of rally fans over the course of the week.

A special rally MotorExpo and FanZone has been set up with big screen televisions giving fans the chance to watch all of the action happening out on the stages live under the cover of the VEC. All of the top teams competing in Brother Rally New Zealand will be based at the VEC and they will be on show to the public as they service their cars during the rally itself.

The MotorExpo promises to be a popular addition to the village with cars from Citroën, Ford, Mini, Mitsubishi, Skoda, Subaru and Volkswagen all on show. Merchandise counters will also be stocked full from Sunday as will the food and drink counters.

The superstars of world rallying – including eight-time reigning world rally champion Sébastien Loeb, Citroën teammate Mikko Hirvonen, fan favourite Petter Solberg, defending rally champion Jari-Matti Latvala and local hope Hayden Paddon – will be onsite to meet fans, sign autographs and will conduct their post day press conferences in front of the hordes of fans in attendance.

The first chance for the public to see the world’s leading drivers here in New Zealand will be this Sunday for the Rally Family Day at the Viaduct Events Centre from 10am-4pm. It promises to be a huge day of family-friendly, rally-related, fun activities to do and see with a special kids’ rally club. The Red Bull simulators will be there for fans to experience what it is like driving a World Rally Car and there’s also the chance to race in the scooter rally.  All the drivers taking part in this year’s Brother Rally New Zealand will be present and will be signing autographs from 12.30pm to 1:40pm.

In a first for Kiwi fans, the Brother Cup will find the best fan driver over the course of the weekend using dual simulators to pit teams of two against each other. Chasing times initially set by some of the leading rally drivers, fans race have the chance to move to the top of the Brother Cup leader-board and win the grand prize trophy that will be awarded during the official winners’ podium on the Sunday afternoon. Along with the accolades the winner gets to partake in a two-day course at New Zealand’s own Rally School – Rally Drive New Zealand.

The Rally Village is open daily from 10am-8.30pm Friday June 22 and Saturday June 23, and from 10am-4.30pm on Sunday June 24.

Additionally; numerous prime and other spectator viewing areas offer excellent opportunities to watch the high speed action in person across all three days of the event. Sunday’s action includes the free-for-everyone Auckland Domain super special stage before the ceremonial finish at 3:30pm near the Viaduct Events Centre on Auckland’s waterfront.
