200,000 people in downtown Auckland for Rugby World Cup opening day

The 2011 Rugby World Cup started here in Auckland with an amazing day of events in downtown Auckland followed by a giant fireworks display over the Auckland harbour and of course the opening ceremony at Eden Park stadium.  The opening match for the tournament was All Blacks vs Tonga which was watched by a sold out crowd and a record television audience.

During the day around 200,000 people poured into Auckland´s downtown and waterfront to be a part of the festivities. While those that were lucky enough to have tickets then travelled to the stadium to watch the opening ceremony and first match, thousands of people stayed at the waterfront to watch it all on giant screens and continue with the party afterwards.

Here at school students and teachers started the day early so we could finish early and be a part of it all.  Everybody had a great time.
